Overview

The Edinburgh Academy first opened its doors to pupils on 1st October 1824.The Founders of the Academy were motivated by the highest educational ideals. As the Edinburgh New Town grew, its leading citizens were not satisfied with mediocre education in overcrowded schools. They resolved to create a new school of their own in which excellence could be achieved, and they gave their academy a motto that reflected their aspirations - " Always Excel."Today that school, the Edinburgh Academy, still stands for excellence. Our objective is for each child to be the best that he or she can be, and both the scale of our school and our method of working is dedicated to that end.Famous alumni of the Edinburgh Academy include Robert Louis Stevenson, James Clark Maxwell andMichael Blair. Sir Walter Scott was a founding director of the Academy.
