Overview

In 2010, the total roll of 1,100 boarding and day students is the greatest in the school's history. New Hall has been acknowledged as “the fastest growing independent Catholic school in the UK” (The Universe, 25 October 2009). The recession-beating 42% growth in student numbers from 2007-09 is understood to be without precedent across all types of independent schools. New Hall is now the largest Catholic boarding and day school in the UK. Today New Hall operates an unusual and highly successful ‘diamond model' structure, i.e. co-education in the Preparatory School (ages 3-11), single-sex education in the Boys' Division and Girls' Division and co-education in the Sixth Form. In this way, New Hall provides the best of both worlds: the benefits of a co-educational environment together with the advantages of girls and boys being taught separately at Key Stages 3 & 4. The provision of single-sex education during adolescence enables students to grow in confidence, whilst enjoying an education that is specifically tailored and that recognises the different ways in which boys and girls learn. New Hall is a strong and thriving community, set in a stunning location in the heart of the Home Counties, just 30 minutes by train from London. Students can board from ages 7-18 in one of 4 boarding houses. High academic expectations and achievements, together with outstanding pastoral care and exceptional drama, music and sports facilities and provision, together make New Hall a wonderful place to be educated. All this takes place on a stunning campus, close to London, which is dominated by the magnificent former Tudor palace of Beaulieu. Approached from a mile-long tree-lined avenue, the main building is Grade I listed and the grounds and avenue of trees are also a listed historic park and garden. New Hall is ranked by English Heritage in the top 2% of heritage buildings in the country. The estate was formally owned by Sir Thomas Boleyn, father of Anne Boleyn; King Henry VIII acquired it in 1517 and built the first of his great palaces, Beaulieu, on which Hampton Court was modelled. At New Hall, the ethos is inspired by the founding Religious Community, the Canonesses of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. The Religious Community's spirituality, rooted in the Augustinian tradition, has a special emphasis on the Resurrection, prayer, community life, hospitality and service to others. The faith which lies at the heart of this foundation remains essential to the character of the charity today. The school welcomes all those who support its ethos. Although 85% of students are from South East England, there is also a wonderful international mix of students from over 35 different countries. Excellence in pastoral care is a distinctive quality of the school and students enjoy learning in a supportive community where teamwork and the importance of developing a moral compass for life are emphasised. Christian values lie at the heart of the school, expressed most profoundly through the award-winning New Hall Voluntary Service (NHVS), which helps those in need in the local and wider community.
