Overview

Cokethorpe School, founded in 1957 with 14 pupils, is now a vibrant community of almost 700 girls and boys aged from 4 to 18. At the heart of the School is an elegant Queen Anne Mansion House, built by the first Viscount Harcourt to entertain his friends Pope, Swift, Dryden and other great literary figures. This sense of history, and the beautiful setting, imbues important values such as moral character, knowledge, ambition and virtue.Much of the teaching, creative arts and sporting activities, which still reflect these values, take place in a range of modern buildings, built around a series of courtyards. These new buildings contrast with, but in no way detract from, the character of the original buildings. Along with a continuous programme of development, these instil a sense of progress and encourage our pupils to be forward-looking and inquisitive.Cokethorpe is unique in many ways. Not only is the setting unsurpassed but we are the only coeducational day school in Oxfordshire with both Junior and Senior Schools on the same site. The mélange of age groups, gender, brothers and sisters, creates an atmosphere built on mutual respect and a sense of identity. The diversity of backgrounds and abilities adds variety, normality and reality. Your children will discover unsuspected gifts and develop aspects of their characters that can rarely be brought out in the classroom alone but which are integral to life in a balanced community. Our school has a soul, a distinctive personality, and an identity that reflects our history and principles, strong leadership and the purposeful, happy and unpretentious qualities of our staff and pupils.
