Course Description

Combining taught modules and research, the highly vocational MTech programme focuses on the practical application of innovative techniques while developing the individual?s professional career path. It is designed to emphasise the understanding and exploitation of advanced technologies and management disciplines in relation to the water sector, alongside developing the individual?s applied research capability. This programme has been developed in conjunction with the Water Sciences? Course Advisory Committee, an industrial liaison committee whose members include the major UK water utilities, international engineering consultancies and contractors, the Energy and Utility Sector Skills Council and others. Combining a taught Master?s with company-based project work, this innovative programme will provide a solid academic base and a rich experience with which to develop a career in the water sector. The course is specifically designed to: ? educate students in the fundamentals and application of process science for advanced water and wastewater treatment ? educate students in relevant management disciplines ? develop the capability of each student to undertake applied industrial research and project work both individually and in teams ? fulfil the requirements of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management(CIWEM)and the Institution of Water Officers (IWO). Students are registered full-time and complete a combined programme of campus and company-based study over a fixed period of two years. The course provides suitably qualified candidates with ?10,500 per annum plus fees (at UKEC rate) and a laptop. Cranfield s facilities include a sewage treatment works and pilot-plant hall, a grey water treatment facility, and state-of-the-art microbiology and clean water laboratories. The course comprises eight assessed modules, two group projects, an individual research project portfolio (the MTech thesis), and an industrial placement report. Students spend from October to December at Cranfield undertaking five compulsory modules. The following 12 months are on placement in students? sponsoring companies undertaking a portfolio of project work before returning to Cranfield to complete the remaining taught modules and group design projects over a period of 4 months. Students then return to their sponsoring company for 2-3 months and complete the MTech degree period by writing and submitting a portfolio-based thesis. Modules ? Water and Wastewater Treatment Principles ? Process Science and Engineering ? Chemical Processes ? Physical Processes ? Biological Processes ? Hydraulics and Pumping Systems ? Risk Management and Reliability Engineering ? Research Processes Student view ?The structure of the course is excellent as the knowledge gained in the taught modules is immediately put into practice in the form of the design projects. The thesis placement allows one to gain experience in real working environment, and to make contacts with many professionals in the water industry. Lectures are given by both academic staff and industry professionals, often experts in their field, and this ensures that information is current and relevant to today?s water industry. The course will not only enhance the opportunities for employment within the water industry, it will also provide one with the knowledge and experience to be successful.? Richard Harnett, MTech student with Anglian Water 2005-2007 Suitable for science and engineering graduates keen to pursue careers within utilities and companies involved in designing, engineering and managing processes and assets for water supply and wastewater service provision. Takes you on to positions within the water sector as process engineers and technologists, able to make a contribution to the ongoing performance and operation of utilities and companies within the water sector, and with the potential for progress to senior management positions. You will be taught by members of research and academic
