Course Description

This MSc provides a knowledge and understanding of the field of reproductive science and women s health, specifically human genetics, female physiology and anatomy, reproductive health, gametogenesis, preimplantation development and IVF, pregnancy and childbirth, prenatal diagnosis and screening, preimplantation genetic diagnosis and breast and reproductive cancers. What and how will I learn? On completion of the programme, students have a developed knowledge and understanding in the theoretical (including clinical) and laboratory aspects of reproductive science and women s health. They gain transferable skills including information technology, analysis of scientific papers, essay writing, seminar and poster presentation, research techniques, peer review and laboratory skills. Degree Structure Students undertake courses to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of eight core courses (120 credits) and a research project (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full-time nine months and part-time two years) is offered. Core Modules Basic Genetics Female Reproductive Physiology and Anatomy Reproductive Health Gametogenesis, Preimplantation Development and IVF Prenatal Diagnosis and Screening Pregnancy and Childbirth Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Breast and Reproductive Cancers Dissertationreport All MSc Students undertake a clinical or laboratory based research project, which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words. Assessment is through unseen examination, essays, laboratory practicals, problem booklets, peer assessment and the dissertation and viva. Why should I study this degree at UCL? Your future career By the end of the programme, all students will have gained knowledge of both the clinical and laboratory aspects of reproductive science and women s health. This will enable the science-orientated students to go on to take PhD s, or develop careers in embryology, and the medically orientated students will be able to develop their careers in the field of reproductive science and women s health. Entry Requirements A minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor s degree in a relevant discipline, or a medical qualification (MBBS) from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Those applying for scholarship funding (particularly overseas applicants) should take note of application deadlines. Who can apply? The programme is suitable for medical, science and nursing students who wish to specialise in this field and develop the skills required by today s science and clinical staff, such as oral and poster presentations, writing scientific documents, IT skills and laboratory techniques such as PCR and FISH.
