Course Description

THIS COURSE OFFERS PODIATRISTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXTEND THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN SPECIALIST AREAS AND RESEARCH AT MASTERS LEVEL WHILST MINIMISING DISRUPTION TO EMPLOYMENT Description: As a podiatrist you will be aware that the changing nature of healthcare delivery requires you to continue developing your postgraduate education, keeping you up-to-date with the latest developments and improving your career prospects in healthcare effectively. This innovative course allows podiatrists to customise course content to respond to and contribute to the demands of constant change and improvement to modern day podiatry practice. Structure: This course is modular and is normally studied part-time over a minimum period of three years up to a maximum period of seven years. The full MSc programme can be studied without attendance at QMU although you will need access to a computer and the internet to access QMU's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where you will access the course material and be in constant contact with tutors and fellow learners. You can however select to study modules that require part time attendance at QMU, which will be for a short time during October, January and May. The duration of attendance will depend on the modules that you select. This MSc also provides an opportunity to study a module on Pharmacology for Podiatrist which has been approved by the Health Professions Council for annotation on their register. Course Covers: Compulsory modules - Research methods - Project Examples of elective modules: - Pharmacology for podiatrists - The ageing foot - Tissue viability - Current developments in podiatry - Managing change in healthcare - Working together in the management of chronic pain - Evidence-based health and social care - Developing professional practice work-based learning - Podiatric mechanics - Medicine and pathology - Diabetes modules from the MSc in Diabetes - Appropriate modules from the MSc Physiotherapy MSc Occupational Therapy programmes Teaching and Assessment: A range of student-centred learning methods including tutorials, seminars and experimental laboratory classes are utilised. When you are studying away from QMU, access to QMU?s VLE will provide you with learning support and will be used as the centre for course work discussions. Your performance will be assessed by coursework, however, some modules require assessment by examination. Careers: This course will help you incorporate your new found skills and can contribute to your continuing professional development portfolio. Associate Student: You can also register as an associate student to study single modules in areas of interest. Outcomes: The programme has a modular structure which means that study is broken down to blocks of either 15 credits (single module) or 30 credits (a double module). Award of the MSc Podiatry requires successful completion of 180 credits of study Learners can choose to cease study at 120 credits which on successful completion will receive the award of Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip in Podiatry). At least one of the research modules and 30 credits from the list of core modules must be studies for the award of Postgraduate Diploma. Learners can choose to cease study at 60 credits which on successful completion will receive the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Podiatry(PgCert in Podiatry). At least 30 credits of the PGCert study must be selected from one of the core modules. Refer to structure guide for PgCert study. Learners can choose to study individual modules as an Associate Student, as part of continuing professional development. On successful completion of individual modules a transcript will be provided as evidence of academic credit. AttendanceLocation: The course offers a number of different routes to suit the needs of adult learners. You may study by distance e-learning, or by short periods of attendance at Queen Margaret University.
