Course Description

This comprehensive programme is intended for professionals specialising in Paediatrics and Child Health and is based at the Institute of Child Health, which sits in a unique position in UK paediatrics because of its strong links to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and University College London. What and how will I learn? The Community Child Health pathway aims to help participants develop the public health skills central to community child health practice. In particular, students are encouraged to develop a critical approach to practice and policy and to learn the skills required to evaluate and synthesise research evidence. Degree Structure MSc students undertake courses to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of three core courses (45 credits), five optional courses (75 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, flexible 2-5 years) is offered. Core Modules Evidence-based Child Health Research Methodology and Statistics Epidemiology for Child Health Dissertationreport All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words. Assessment is through a combination of unseen examinations, class-based tests, (including a MCQ test), appraisals, essays, personal portfolio, poster and oral presentations, the research proposal, and the dissertation and viva. The UCL Institute of Child Health has a very close relationship with the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and much of its research and teaching is carried out on a joint basis. Great Ormond Street Hospital is the largest Paediatric hospital in the UK with 21 medical, 11 surgical and eight diagnostic specialties, plus eight paramedical and other clinical support services. Graduate students benefit from excellent facilities in both laboratory and non-laboratory subjects. The Institute of Child Health is also engaged in research in population health sciences in the UK and overseas activity. Your future career This pathway provides the skills necessary to become a community health practitioner. Graduates of the programme will be able to assess the need for child health services and planning of services, and understand the rationale and organisation of preventive child health services and the relationship between social conditions and health. Entry Requirements Normally a minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor s degree or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Medically qualified applicants should have post qualification experience in paediatrics or child health. Non-medically qualified applicants should have a first degree in a related subject and several years specialist experience of working in hospitals, community child health or public health services for children and families.
