Course Description

This comprehensive programme is intended for professionals specialising in Paediatrics and Child Health and is based at the Institute of Child Health, which sits in a unique position in UK paediatrics because of its strong links to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and University College London. What and how will I learn? Students on this pathway gain an understanding of the principles of evidence-based paediatrics, and of the impact of molecular genetics on diagnosis and management of the child and family. They develop an awareness of current and future developments in paediatric medicine and child health and gain the skills necessary for independent research. Degree Structure MSc students undertake courses to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of four core courses (60 credits), four optional courses (60 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, flexible 2-5 years) is offered. Core Modules Evidence-based Child Health Research Methodology and Statistics Specialist Paediatrics I Specialist Paediatrics II Dissertationreport All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words. Assessment is through a combination of unseen examination, class-based tests, (including a MCQ test), appraisals, essays, personal portfolio, oral presentations, the research proposal, and the dissertation and viva. The UCL Institute of Child Health has a very close relationship with the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and much of its research and teaching is carried out on a joint basis. Great Ormond Street Hospital is the largest Paediatric hospital in the UK with 21 medical, 11 surgical and eight diagnostic specialties, plus eight paramedical and other clinical support services. Graduate students benefit from excellent facilities in both laboratory and non-laboratory subjects. The Institute of Child Health is also engaged in research in population health sciences in the UK and overseas activity. Entry Requirements Normally a minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor s degree or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Medically qualified applicants should have post qualification experience in paediatrics or child health. Non-medically qualified applicants should have a first degree in a related subject and several years specialist experience of working in hospitals, community child health or public health services for children and families.
