MSc Health Psychology MSc Health Psychology Coventry University

Coventry University

Masters Degree , Health Psychology

Course Description

The MSc Health Psychology at Coventry University is designed to build upon undergraduate knowledge and skills to provide an in-depth understanding of health psychology upon successful completion of the course. Health psychology is based on the premise that illness is caused by a combination of biological, psychological and social factors – things like genetic conditions, anxiety levels or lifestyle choices, family relationships and support systems – some of which can be remedied with counselling, education, social support and behaviour change interventions.

You will be provided with the opportunity to explore how to develop, evaluate and deliver relevant interventions in a whole range of situations which are designed to improve health or enable individuals to better cope with illness. This may include helping people maintain a healthy weight, avoid risky or unhealthy behaviours and maintain a positive outlook in order to combat stress, depression and anxiety. Health psychology is the subfield of psychology that aims to understand and promote physical health and general wellbeing. Health psychology can be used in a range of applied settings to help promote healthier lifestyles (e.g. help people to lose weight or stop smoking), help people to live well with long term conditions (e.g. self-manage their diabetes appropriately) and to improve the healthcare system (e.g. advise doctors about better ways to communicate with patients).

Course Content

  • Year one

Overview

There will be 11 modules in total to complete which will include a mixture of theory-based and research methods modules. The course is grounded in a scientist-practitioner perspective which emphasises the importance of empirical research for applied practice. A critical understanding of research underpins the work of practitioners and is of foundational importance for anyone wishing to practice health psychology. As such, research training in both quantitative and qualitative methods and critical assessment of research is of central importance within the course. You can also engage in your own independent empirical research project on a health psychology related topic.

This course also includes a Professional Development module which is an individually tailored version of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI)** Professional Development module.

**The University’s accreditation with CMI shall be up for renewal in 2021. Whilst the University hopes and anticipates that any renewal would be successful, if the renewal were to be unsuccessful, this course would no longer be accredited and we would notify applicants and students as soon possible.
