Course Description

The Chemical Research MSc at UCL introduces students to the methods of scientific research and the techniques of a particular research area in Chemistry. Students broaden their knowledge of chemistry through a wide selection of taught courses, and are able to tailor the programme to meet their personal research interests. What and how will I learn? Students develop a systematic approach to devising experiments andor computations. They gain a familiarity with a broad range of laboratory techniques that may be transferred to other fields of chemistry, alongside direct contact with spectroscopic techniques and the acquisition of tools for the critical analysis of experimental and computational observations. Degree Structure Students undertake courses to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of two core courses (60 credits), two optional courses (30 credits) and a research project (90 credits). Core Modules Research Methods and Techniques Literature Project Dissertationreport All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 15,000 words, an oral examination and a short presentation. Options OPTIONS MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: Structural Methods in Modern Chemistry Advanced Topics in Inorganic Chemistry Organometallic Chemistry Inorganic Rings, Chains and Clusters New Directions in Materials Chemistry Advanced Topics in Organic Chemistry Strategy and Tactics in Advanced Organic Synthesis Natural Chemical Products Biological Chemistry Principles of Drug Design Advanced Topics in Physical Chemistry Computational Chemistry Frontiers in Experimental Physical Chemistry Further details available on subject website: http:www.chem.ucl.ac.ukresearchpostgraduatemsc_research.htm The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory classes and research supervision. Assessment is through the dissertation, unseen written examinations, research papers, a written literature survey, and an oral exam. All students will be expected to attend research seminars relevant to their broad research interest. Why should I study this degree at UCL? UCL s Chemistry Department offers an exciting and vibrant environment in which to study. Students develop experience in scientific methods, techniques for reporting science and in the many skills required for a future career. Our interests and research activities span the whole spectrum of chemistry from the development of new drugs to the prediction of the structure of new catalytic materials. The oldest chemistry department in England, our distinguished history includes Ramsay s Nobel prize-winning discovery of the elements argon, krypton, neon and xenon, and Sir Christopher Ingold laying the foundations of kinetics and mechanisms in organic chemistry. Your future career This programme provides the ideal foundation for further doctoral research. How to apply The deadline for applications is 4 September for the year of entry however students are advised to apply as early as possible due to competition for places. Those applying for scholarship funding (particularly overseas applicants) should take note of application deadlines. Who can apply? This MSc is suitable for students with an undergraduate degree in Chemistry or a related subject, who wish to gain an introduction to the methods of Chemical Research. The programme provides an ideal foundation for MPhilPhD degree courses. Funding Most students are funded through EPSRC, BBSRC, or NERC studentships and CASE awards, or through European Union, industrial or charitabl
