Course Description

The market for unmanned and autonomous vehicles is increasing. Such vehicles have numerous existing and potential applications. For example, autonomous air vehicles can be used for search and surveillance, mapping crop-spraying and environment and weather monitoring. Autonomous ground vehicles have very diverse applications such as factory automation and mine clearance. Increasingly, the requirements for such vehicles are for more autonomous operation. The proposed new MSc programme will be unique in the UK, and will focus on the fundamental science and technology required for the successful control of autonomous vehicles. Graduates in the programme will have acquired the necessary fundamental knowledge and enabling skills to contribute towards the autonomous vehicle industry. The course consists of two equally weighted components: the taught course and a research thesis. The taught course consists of lectures in aerodynamics, flight dynamics, hydrodynamics, ground vehicle dynamics, control systems, modelling and simulation, sensor systems, decision-making, autonomous navigation and systems autonomy. Research topics can be either selected from those put forward by the teaching team or chosen by students in agreement with the academic staff. Suitable for graduates with an interest in dynamics and control systems who are seeking an enabling set of skills to find employment with and contribute towards the burgeoning autonomous vehicle industry. In addition to full-time study, the modular approach is especially attractive for part-time study. This is enhanced by a three-stage programme from a Postgraduate Certificate to Postgraduate Diploma through to a Master of Science. Takes you on to excellent employment prospects. The course in unique in the United Kingdom, and the major aerospace industries are increasing their interests in UAVs. For graduates wishing to progress to a PhD, the course provides an excellent basis from which to further specialise in the fields of dynamics and control as well as autonomous technologies.
