Course Description

Atmospheric pollution damages human health, ecosystems and vegetation, and is expected to worsen in many regions as development and urbanisation increase. Developing effective strategies for the management and control of air pollution is a key environmental challenge facing society today. The MSc and Postgraduate Diploma courses in Air Pollution Management and Control provide a comprehensive understanding and training in the fundamental processes involved in atmospheric pollution, and the practical approaches used to monitor, control and reduce air pollution worldwide. The course combines taught modules with an independent major research project. The taught modules introduce the nature of our atmosphere, its composition and meteorology, air pollutant emissions, air pollution chemistry and climate change. They also cover the practical measures used to limit emissions from sources ranging from power stations to vehicles and the legislative and policy framework used to enforce air quality objectives. The research project allows you to undertake an in-depth investigation of a particular aspect of air pollution of interest to you, and further your level of understanding. The MSc course is offered on a full-time (1 year) and part-time (over 2 years) basis it is also possible to take just the taught modules leading to a Postgraduate Diploma, again over one or two years. Around 15-20 students in total take the course each year, drawn from a wide range of backgrounds from the UK, Europe and around the world. Career Opportunities in this area are increasing due to increasing air quality and climate change legislation, and increasing public awareness of environmental challenges. Course graduates go on to careers in local authorities, consultancy, the Environment Agency, industry and to further study (e.g. PhD).
